The People’s Union for Civil Liberties has condemned the attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Finance Minister Amit Mitra when they came to attend a meeting of the National Planning Commission in New Delhi by activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI), the students’ wing of the Communist Part of India (Marxist). In a statement, PUCL general secretary V. Suresh said such acts of violence by political parties were incompatible with democratic practices and unbefitting of a national party with a long tradition of principled politics. He said the PUCL was equally concerned and condemned the attack on CPI(M) offices and members by Trinamool Congress cadres across West Bengal.
