A section of traders in Tiruvannamalai downed their shutters protesting the way in which eviction of encroachments has been carried out in the town on Monday.

Municipality, Revenue and Highways departments carried out eviction of encroachments on busy Theradi Street starting from Gandhi Statue on Monday morning in view of forthcoming Karthigai Deepam festival.

Staircases, elevations etc. of some commercial establishments get affected in the operation. Hence traders started protesting the act saying authorities should have told them about it in advance as the action leaves their places mutilated during busy Deepavali season.

Meanwhile, Tiruvannamalai MLA E.V. Velu and host of DMK functionaries crossing the place paused and expressed their solidarity with protesting traders saying that eviction should have been carried out after consulting the traders in amicable manner.

However as the operation continued traders assembled in Theradi Street again.

DMK functionaries including former municipal chairman R. Sridharan, DMK town secretary Karthi Velmaran former municipal vice-chairman R. Selvam and others stood with them protesting on the street.

Many detained

Police arrested many of them after cautioning to disperse. Then the eviction resumed.
