TAMBARAM: A large number of Christians from all over the State who were on a ‘padayatra' were detained at St. Thomas Mount here on Friday.

According to a press release and police sources, Archbishop A.M. Chinappa, Chengalpattu Bishop A. Neetinathan and Mary John, Chairman, National Council of Dalit Christians, were detained for trying to take part in a procession to meet Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and submit a memorandum to him.

A few hundred Dalit Christians and activists had been seeking an appointment with Mr. Karunanidhi and in support, many like-minded organisations had begun a padayatra in Kanyakumari last month. However, police clarified that they did not arrest anyone, but only detained the ‘padayatris' as a huge group wanted to walk through the city, which they said, would cause traffic problems. The Chief Minister, according to the release, agreed to meet them and assured them that he would look into their grievances.
