Jewellery showroom owners block traffic in Tirunelveli

: The mysterious death of a goldsmith triggered tension and road roko here on Thursday.

Alleging that the goldsmith died of severe internal injuries he had sustained in the attack by the police, a section of the jewellery showroom owners blocked traffic.

The owners alleged that they were facing frequent harassments these days from the crime branch police, who picked up some of their colleagues or the goldsmiths for interrogation on charges that they had bought the gold ornaments from the burglars and chain-snatchers. When a few jewellery showroom owners and goldsmiths were picked up for an interrogation a week ago, they were allegedly beaten up by the police in the guise of recovering the stolen articles from them.

“One Rajasekar from C.N. Village near Tirunelveli Junction, who was also picked up by the police for an interrogation along with six others, died in the hospital on Wednesday night under mysterious circumstances. Though the police claimed that Rajasekar had committed suicide by consuming poison, we suspect that Rajasekar succumbed to injuries he had sustained during the police interrogation,” said Shajahan, president of Tirunelveli City Jewellery Showroom Owners’ Association.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli City, M. Loganathan came to the road rook venue and invited them to the City Police Commissionerate for talks with the Police Commissioner.

The Assistane Commissioner of Police also assured them that appropriate action would be taken based on the post-mortem report.

With this assurance from Dr. Loganathan, the protestors gave up the agitation.
