High drama prevailed near New Bus Stand on Wednesday after a 25-year-old man climbed a 130-foot-tall mobile tower and threatened to commit suicide if his lover was not reunited with him.

At 2.30 p.m., people spotted the man atop the tower. As crowd started to gather on the busy road, traffic was affected.

Fire and police personnel rushed to the spot and tried to persuade him to climb down.

However, the man threatened to jump if they initiated any action. Assistant Commissioner of Police Chandrasekaran, Station Officer C. Venkatachalam, Pallapatti Inspector Senthil Kumar pacified him. Inquiry revealed that he was M. Kannan from Nadupatti in Dharmapuri district and working as an electrician in Coimbatore. Kannan said he was in love with a girl and they had left home to get married. However, the girl’s parents took her back. He demanded that the girl be united with him.
