Members of the Popular Front of India on Tuesday staged a demonstration in the city to protest against the way the wards have been reserved in the Coimbatore Corporation.

The organisation said that reserving Ward 87, formed by combining wards one, two, three and 21 of the Kuniamuthur Municipality, and Ward 95, formed by merging wards one, two, three and six of Kurichi Municipality, for members of the Scheduled Caste and women was “unfair.” Eighty-five percent of the 19,000-odd voters were Muslims in both wards and the reservation of wards had denied the members of the community an opportunity to contest and win elections.

The organisation pointed out that committees headed by Justice Rajinder Sachar and Justice Ranganath Mishra had pointed that Muslims were backward and their condition was worse than those from the backward class.

Prior to reserving the wards the Coimbatore Corporation ought to have taken the residents into confidence, the organisation said.
