The public health directorate of Tamil Nadu has sent a proposal to the State government for banning gutkha and other cancer-inducing tobacco products, and the government is taking steps to implement it. This has been conveyed to former Union Minister Anbumani Ramadoss by the Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine.

In a statement here, Mr. Anbumani said he had written to the government seeking a ban on tobacco products first on May 31 and again on July 16. Subsequently, a demonstration in support of the demand was held in Chennai on August 2.

Mr. Anbumani said he had received a letter from the director informing him about the proposal to ban these products.

“As Chennai is emerging as a capital of oral cancer, the State government should immediately give effect to the ban,” he said.
