ERODE: The district administration has decided to conduct a number of programmes to create awareness among people on tuberculosis ahead of the World TB Day to be observed on March 24.

Seminars, camps and other programmes will be held in different parts of the district starting from March 17. The first programme will be held at the Perundurai Medical College Hospital on March 17. Similar awareness programmes will be held at Athani on March 18, Punjai Puliyampatti on March 19 and TN Palayam on March 20.

On March 24, an awareness rally will be organised in Erode town in which school and college students, members of self-help groups and volunteers from non-governmental organisations will participate. A seminar on TB will also be conducted in the town.

The administration had also decided to conduct awareness programmes in all the TB units in the district on March 24.

The decision was taken at a meeting organised by the Health Department on Wednesday. Collector R. Sudalaikannan presided over the meeting. Deputy Director of Health Services Dr. A. Rajasekaran was present.

24th March commemorates the day in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced that he had discovered the cause of tuberculosis.
