TIRUCHI: An awareness programme on the hazards of tobacco was conducted under the aegis of National Service Scheme by the School Education Department at the E.R. Higher Secondary School on Wednesday.

Presiding over the programme that had the theme ‘Tobacco, the enemy of Mankind,’ the Chief Educational Officer K. Swaminathan said that addiction to tobacco could be eliminated through yoga and Ayurvedic medicines. He encouraged NSS officers to be role models for the younger generation.

V. Jeyapal, Director, GVN Hospital, Tiruchi, explained the defects caused to the body due to consumption of tobacco and E. Vidhubala, a doctor from the Cancer Institute – Adayar handled a session on ‘health consequences of tobacco.’

M. Rajamony, Head and Youth Officer, NSS Regional Centre, Chennai, made a presentation on ‘Healthy Youth for Healthy India.’

M. Theresanathan, Field Publicity Officer and P. Thirunavukarasu, NSS Co-ordinator, also addressed the participants comprising 174 NSS Officers.
