The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis will investigate sewer deaths in the past 10 years in Chennai and other parts of the State, said its member K.B. Krishnamurty. It would conduct a study to ascertain the compensation paid to the family of those Safai Karamcharis who died while in service, he said. Addressing media persons after a public consultation here on Wednesday, he said that manual scavenging was still prevalent in the city despite a ban imposed across the country in 1993.

Mr.Krishnamurty said that sexual abuse of women Safai Karamchari at workplace was also being reported in the city. “The police should take action,” he said.

A lot of grievances have been brought to the notice of the Commission. Proper changing room for women Safai Karamchari in local areas, , he said. He suggested procurement of more machines to clean the sewer network in the city.
