Rights activists, PDK stage demonstration

SALEM: Rights activists and cadres of Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (PDK) staged a demonstration here on Tuesday urging the State Government to appoint a High Court judge to probe into the violent incidents in Uthapuram and E. Kottaipatti in Madurai district in which a Dalit youth was killed in police firing recently.

The members converging under the banner of Centre for Protection of Civil Liberties (CPCL) - Tamil Nadu- alleged that police were supporting the caste Hindus in these villages. They urged that the police officer who opened fire should be arrested under the provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989.

They also wanted the affected villages to be declared as disturbed under this act and take necessary steps to prevent any further occurrences in future. They also demanded another inquiry by a retired High Court judge into the atrocities committed against Dalits all over the State.

Condemned

They also condemned the attempt to intimidate human rights activists by a few gangs with political affiliation in Salem district. CPCL deputy general secretary P. Damayanthi presided.
