The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Wednesday demanded an inquiry into the “abnormal increase” in population of Yanam.

R. Viswanathan, the party’s territorial secretary, said that according to the data released in 2011, the population had gone up by 70 per cent compared to the previous census. The “abnormal increase” might be owing to migration from the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh to derive benefits of welfare schemes.

Therefore, a high-level committee must be constituted to find out the reason behind the increase in population.
