Spurt in cocoon production is a morale booster

TIRUCHI: With the Tiruchi region comprising Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, and Perambalur registering a boom in cocoon production, the Department of Sericulture has planned to enhance its raw silk production capacity in the region, by promoting private sectors to set up silk reeling units.

This seems to be the second step the Department has taken, shortly after increasing the area under sericulture cultivation in the region.

From 1,200 acres a few years ago, the area under sericulture has stepped up to 1,620 acres by now.

An additional 170 acres had been brought under sericulture in the Tiruchi district, followed by152 acres in Pudukottai , 65 acres in Thanjavur and 40 acres in Perambalur district in the past few years. Pudukottai has become a hub of the activity.

The Department-run reeling units, one each at Tiruchi and Pudukottai, has been catering to the marketing needs of farmers, by purchasing their cocoons. "The spurt in the cocoon production has resulted in the need for starting reeling units and the Department now encourages entrepreneurs to set up reeling units", says Regional Deputy Director (in-charge), Sericulture Department, C. Sam Devadas.

He says technologically advanced and improvised designs in the reeling machinery (Multi-end basins) will be an added advantage for the entrepreneurs.

The annual distribution of the Disease-Free Layings (DFLS) eggs, the `raw material' for the cocoon production, is 1.75 lakhs and the production is 93 tonnes.

The region's average monthly production is now about two tonnes, almost double the quantum produced years ago. "The Department will supply the required cocoons to the entrepreneurs without any hitch", he says.
