A 28-year-old undertrial prisoner lodged in the District Jail here in connection with a robbery case escaped on Wednesday.

According to sources, the sub-jail, which is situated adjacent to the Collectorate, has around 110 prisoners, both remand and undertrial.

Meanwhile on Wednesday, some four prisoners were brought near the jail gate to collect vegetables and one prisoner who was posted to collect milk did not return to the jail campus and was identified as Jose.

They said that Jose (28) of Veerapuli in Thadikkarankonam was an undertrial and brought to the prison on January 13, 2011 in connection with a chain-snatching case reported at Boothapandy police station.

When Jose came to the jail main gate to take the milk cans, police guards were not present there and the gates were also not locked. Making good use of this opportunity, Jose opened the main gate and went out. On a complaint from the jail authorities, the police have filled an FIR and are on the lookout for Jose, said District Superintendent of Police K Bhavaneeswari.

When Jose was kept at the Boothapandy police station for interrogation, he had escaped with the handcuffs and was caught by the police after 10 days.
