MADURAI: Education will be a priority area for the district administration this year and more focus would be given to education related initiatives, C. Kamaraj, Madurai Collector, has said.

He said that a strategy will be prepared to get better results in public examinations in 2010-11 academic year both in Plus Two and Class X.

“The Plus Two results declared on Friday have been good for Madurai district. There was nearly three per cent increase in pass percentage and it is a credit for us,” the Collector told The Hindu on Saturday.

Mr. Kamaraj said that it had been a good show by the students/schools of Madurai district in the Plus Two examinations this year. “Girls did well in the public examinations and 47 schools in our district secured centum pass. The number of centum scorers too had gone up,” the Collector said while analysing the results.

He said that periodical discussions would be held with groups of teachers and school headmasters to improve the quality of teaching across the district. “We will give importance to Kallar and Adi Dravidar schools.”

Mr. Kamaraj mentioned about the good performance of Corporation schools, centum pass percentage of an Adi Dravidar School in the district and the increase in centum scorers in various subjects. “Confidence levels among school students will have to go up and all steps would be taken in that direction. Education department will receive more focus,” he reiterated.

In the Plus Two examination results declared on Friday, the district registered 90.23 pass percentage as against the pass percentage of 87.61 last year. The number of students who scored centum marks in different subjects had increased to 241 this year compared to 225 last year.
