Loans disbursed to women SHGs to buy milch animals

NAGAPATTINAM: The State Government is according priority for increasing milk production and providing loans to women self-help groups (SHGs) all over the State to purchase milch animals, U. Mathivanan, Minister for Dairy Development, said here on Thursday.

Participating in the Pongal festival organised by the Tourism Department at Poompuhar in Nagapattinam district, the Minister said that banks had already started disbursing loans to the tune of Rs. 6 crore to the women SHGs in the district. The demand for milk has increased manifold in the last few years.

Mr. Mathivanan said that the Government would set up more milk chilling plants wherever necessary in the State and three milk chilling plants each with 5,000 litres capacity would be set up in Poompuhar, Thirukkuvalai and Nagapattinam for storing the milk produced.

He pointed out that the Government was monitoring milk production and its requirement in the State. It was taking steps to boost the production and enable members of the women SHGs get a good income.

The Government had allocated nearly Rs. 1.5 crore for providing all amenities to tourists coming to Poompuhar and to renovate the art gallery and other buildings in the town. He also distributed prizes to the winners in the sports events conducted on the occasion.

Tenkasi S. Jawahar, Collector, who presided over the function, said that the district administration had sent proposals to the Government for improving infrastructure and other facilities at various tourist spots and temple towns in the district at an estimated cost of Rs. 6 crore.

Earlier, K. Ilangovan, Tourist Officer, Poompuhar, welcomed the gathering. E. John Sahayaraj, District Sports Officer, proposed vote of thanks.
