TAMBARAM: ‘Kali’ Ramachandran, the prime suspect in the murder of Tirusulam village panchayat president, A. Ramachandran, last week surrendered with an accomplice at a Chennai court on Wednesday.

While Pallavaram police and personnel of a special team arrested five others in Tindivanam, one more person surrended in a court in Aruppukottai in Virudhunagar district.

‘Kali’ Ramachandran surrendered at a Magistrate’s Court in George Town along with Rameshkumar, while Palanisamy showed up at a court in Aruppukottai. Five others – Velmurugan, Balamurugan, Viji, Kamal and another Ramachandran were arrested by police in Tindivanam.

Most of the suspects were in their twenties, police said, adding that it was established that a dispute over non payment of cash was the motive behind the murder.

A. Ramachandran, the panchayat president, was hacked to death by a group of men while he was returning to his house on March 11. ‘Kali’ Ramachandran, police said, had asked the panchayat president to give Rs.50,000, but the latter had refused.
