Members of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam took to the streets on Monday to protest against the recent increase in milk prices, power tariff and public transport fare, and the abnormal rise in fertilizer costs following the decontrolling of its prices.
Party's town secretary S. Sivabalan said that the decision to increase the bus fare and milk prices could not be justified at any cost.
“The contention that Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation has been running in loss is ridiculous especially when one comes to understand that private bus operators are able to function in profit even at the old slab of rates,” he said.
The MDMK members sought an explanation from the government why the selling price of milk was enhanced by Rs. 6 a litre when only Rs. 2 from it was passed on to the farmers.
The agitators also wanted the government to look into the irregularities in the power distribution to minimise the losses incurred by Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation instead of passing the burden on the common man.
