CHENNAI: Officials of the Customs Air Intelligence Unit on Thursday intercepted a passenger at the Anna International terminal and recovered 942 precious stones worth Rs.8.81 lakh.
C. Rajan, Commissioner of Customs, Airport, said Mustafa Jamal (43) of S.P. Pattinam in Ramanathapuram district had arrived from Colombo. When the authorities questioned him, he told them that he was not carrying any dutiable goods.
Further investigation revealed he had concealed semi-precious stones inside his body.
The precious/semi-precious stones, packed in condoms, were covered with adhesive tapes. The seized stones, weighing 1.25 kg, included blue sapphires, white sapphires, yellow sapphires, cats eye, moon stones and garnets.
Mr. Rajan said the passenger told the Customs authorities that it took two hours for him to swallow the capsules. The passenger had to handover the stones to someone outside the airport, for which he was to be paid Rs.4,000.
