MT Pratibha Warna, the troubled motor tanker, was on Thursday declared an ‘extremely bad vessel’.
The Mercantile Marine Department (MMD), Chennai, which functions under the Directorate General of Shipping, made the declaration on the ground that the validity of all documents concerning the vessel had expired.
Talking to The Hindu , an MMD official said that the department had carried out a four-hour-long inspection of the vessel after obtaining permission from the Chennai Port Trust (ChPT). It concluded that the vessel was unseaworthy.
A four-member team, comprising three supervisors and a seaman welfare officer, boarded the ship at 2 p.m. and carried out inspection for nearly four hours.
