The Shipping Ministry has issued orders on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) under which ports had been asked to spend one to three per cent of their profits for projects relating to welfare of society, the Shipping Minister, G.K. Vasan, said on Saturday.

Speaking at a function to hand over compensation cheques to family members of deceased employees of Chennai Port Trust, he said the Chennai Port which was already running a school at Tondiarpet here and was engaged in other welfare activities would be spending Rs. 77 lakh additionally under the CSR. After Visakhapatnam, Chennai Port was the second to pay compensation to dependants of deceased employees whose names had been removed from compassionate appointment list.
