Frequent traffic snarls occur at flyover construction sites

TIRUCHI: The temporary service lanes at the construction sites of the flyover at Ariyamangalam and TVS Tollgate in the city have turned into major traffic bottlenecks and traffic snarls have become the order of the day at the two vital road junctions.

The service lanes around the construction sites of the fly-overs at Ariyamangalam Traffic Island and TVS Tollgate are in a bad shape causing much difficulty to road users, motorists complain.

At Ariyamangalam, the service lanes that lead from the Chennai Bypass Road to the Thanjavur Road and towards the Thanjavur Highway have suffered extensive damage owing to movement of heavy vehicles. Often lorries, carrying heavy fabrication equipment, get stuck in the potholes, causing traffic snarls. With the Thanjavur Highway and the Tiruchi-Chennai Bypass Road catering to very heavy traffic round-the-clock, traffic is often thrown out of gear.

Gravel strewn on road

Residents also complain that the approaches to several newly-laid road stretches on the Thanjavur Highway were in a poor condition with potholes. Gravel and blue metal strewn around pose a grave threat to two-wheeler riders. Heavy vehicles and buses do not slow down, putting two-wheeler riders, cyclists and pedestrians at a grave risk, says R. Balachandran, a resident of Kattur.

Expressing concern over condition of the road, the Federation of Consumer and Service Organisations has appealed to the National Highways Authority of India to expedite the four-lane work on the Thanjavur Highway.

The stretch between Ukkadai (Ariyamangalam) to Kattur was in very poor condition and the safety of the motorists has been put at risk, said M. Sekaran, convenor of the federation, in a representation.

Residents of Sangiliandapuram and Senthaneerpuram also complain that the approach to the service lane along Sangiliandapuram was in a very bad condition, causing frequent traffic disruption.

The spot being located close to the road over bridge across the railway lines near Golden Rock and heavy vehicles speeding down, two-wheeler riders have to bear the brunt here too. The heavy traffic movement and the traffic snarls make it very difficult for local residents to cross the highway.

Too narrow

At TVS Tollgate, the service lanes along the Tiruchi-Chennai Bypass Road have been too narrow to accommodate the heavy traffic at the junction.

The ‘kutcha’ road near TVS Service Station has taken a severe beating in the recent days, posing much inconvenience to motorists. The automatic traffic signal at the junction has been removed adding to the chaotic condition despite the best efforts of the traffic policemen on duty.
