CHENNAI: Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy on Friday defended the Balasubramanian Committee recommendation of Rs.62,500 as the annual fee for students admitted under management quota seats to self-financing engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu, saying in most other States, the rates were much higher.

“For students from the single window system of counselling, there is no change in fee. The fee has remained the same for the past five years,” he told presspersons here.

The Minister pointed out that the number of seats in government/government-aided engineering colleges had been increased from 1178 in 2006 to 7989 this year. The fee for students in these colleges had been reduced from Rs.12,500 per annum to Rs.7500. Also, as many as 70,000 students would be admitted to self-financing engineering colleges after the single window counselling and they would pay only Rs.32,500 as fee.
