ERODE: Just as stew boiled over from the pongal pot, signifying prosperity and joy, the sales at the Pongal fair conducted by the Handlooms Department also overflowed, surpassing the target set by the Handlooms Department.

"We set a sales target of Rs. 40 lakh for the 15-day fair but actually earned Rs. 42 lakh," said R. Murugesan, the Assistant Director of the Department. The Department recently conducted a handloom fair in which 60 societies across Tamil Nadu participated by setting up 24 stalls.

Chentex tops

Among the handloom societies participated, Chentex from Chennimalai topped the sales with Rs. 4.2 lakhs.

The society is one of the leading manufacturers of bedspreads.

Free dhoti scheme

On the progress of weaving dhotis and saris under the free dhoti and sari scheme, the Assistant Director said against the order of 40 lakh saris, the societies had so far completed 34 lakh pieces, and in the saris segment, 35 lakh saris out of 36 lakhs had been woven.
