Superintendent of Police Ashwin Kotnis organised “Pongal” celebrations and competitions for the families of police personnel, at the parade grounds here on Sunday.

Mr. Kotnis told The Hindu that this was the second year he had arranged for the competitions. Last year, the competitions were conducted on the ‘Pongal' day. However, policemen had to be posted for security duty and, therefore, the celebrations are being held in advance this year to help them discharge their duty on the festival day.

Mr. Kotnis said that policing was a job, ridden with tnsion and it was palpable even among family members.

Even though the families live together in quarters there wasn't much interaction or camaraderie among them. The celebrations would help them in breaking the barrier and facilitate healthy interaction.
