Unfurling of the National Flag, ceremonial parades, honouring of Freedom fighters, and distribution of medals to police personnel marked the Republic Day celebrations in Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts on Thursday.

In Krishangiri, District Collector C.N. Maheshwaran unfurled the Tricolour, took salute, and reviewed a guard of honour at the District Sports Stadium.

Superintendent of Police Abishek Dixit accompanied the Collector. Both of them freed a pair of parrots into the sky to mark peace.

Mr. Maheshwaran gave away Rs. 51 lakh as welfare assistance to 71 beneficiaries on the occasion.

The Collector honoured 23 police personnel with the Chief Minister's Medals. As many as 62 officials and government employees were given mementos and certificates for their meritorious services.

School students danced to the tunes of patriotic songs. Only students from 10 schools participated in the events.

Floats from government departments showcasing welfare schemes, and mock fire fighting by Fire Service Personnel were absent during the Republic Day celebrations this year.

Mr. Maheshwaran honoured 27 Freedom fighters. They were given woollen blankets and a memento.

C. Prakasam, District Revenue Officer, and K. Ramanujam, Chief Education Officer, among others, participated.

In Dharmapuri, District Collector R. Lilly, unfurled the Tricolour, took salute, and reviewed a guard of honour at the District Sports Stadium. Superintendent of Police, Amitkuma Singh, accompanied the Collector.

They freed white parrots into the sky.

Ms. Lilly gave away Rs. 1 crore as welfare assistance to 414 beneficiaries.

She honoured Freedom fighters with shawls. Later, students staged cultural programmes. A total of 424 students participated in the programmes.

Ms. Lilly gave away Chief Minister's Medal to 21 police personnel. A. Baskar, MLA, and S. Ganesh, District Revenue Officer, among others participated.
