Variety entertainment, distribution of welfare assistance and honouring of freedom fighters mark the day
Variety entertainment by school children, impressive march past by the police, distribution of welfare measures to the needy and honouring of freedom fighters and meritorious officials marked the Republic Day celebrations held at the VOC Stadium in Palayamkottai on Thursday.
After unfurling the national flag, Collector R. Selvaraj took the salute from the police, NCC cadets, fire and rescue services personnel and home guards, honoured twelve freedom fighters and outstanding sportsmen and meritorious officials and distributed welfare measures worth Rs. 16.12 lakh to 24 beneficiaries.
The variety entertainment presented by the students of Government Higher Secondary School, Kalakkad, Cathedral Higher Secondary School, Palayamkottai, Corporation Girls' Higher Secondary School, Kallanai, Mary Sargent Girls' Higher Secondary School, Palayamkottai, St. Antony's Primary School, Palayamkottai and STC Branch Upper Clapton Middle School, Tirunelveli triggered wild applause from the hundreds of audience gathered at the venue despite the relatively chill morning weather.
Mayor Vijila Sathyananth, Tirunelveli MP S .S. Ramasubbu, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tirunelveli Range, V. Varadharaju, Superintendent of Police, Tirunelveli, Vijayendra S. Bidari, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli City, M. Jayabalan, Sub-Collector, Cheranmahadevi, Bhajibhakare Rohini Ramdas, Tirunelveli Corporation Commissioner, T. Mohan and Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency N. Amanullah participated in the celebrations.
Mayor Vijila Sathyananth unfurled the national flag at the celebrations held on the Tirunelveli Corporation premises. Republic Day celebrations were also held in the zonal offices of the urban civic body.
Station Director, Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, R. S. Sundar, unfurled the flag at KKNPP site and hoisted the tri-colour at Anu Vijay Township, where a range of cultural events and dog show were organised as part of the Republic Day celebrations.
Member, Convener Committee, V. Sadasivam hoisted the national flag at the celebrations held at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University.
Collector Ashish Kumar unfurled the tri-colour during the Republic Day celebrations held at Tharuvai Sports Arena on Thursday.
After honouring the freedom fighters, commendable officials from various departments and outstanding sportsmen, the Collector took the salute from police, fire and rescue services personnel and NCC cadets and inspected the floats that portrayed the district's progress and achievements during the past.
Mr. Ashish Kumar handed over assistance on behalf of various government departments to the tune of Rs. 31.87 lakh to 112 beneficiaries on the occasion.
Cultural events presented by 1,100 school children on a range of topics including afforestation, green revolution, anti-plastic campaign and national integration captivated the audience.
In the Republic Day celebrations held at V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust on its school ground, A. Subbiah, Chairman, V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust, hoisted the national flag and took salute from CISF, Port Fire Service, Port School NCC cadets and Port School children.
Delivering the Republic Day message, Mr. Subbiah said the port was taking-up a range of measures to augment the infrastructure facilities in the harbour under the ‘National Maritime Agenda 2020' that would increase the existing cargo handling capacity of the Port from 1,000 million tonnes to 2,500 million tonnes though the present capacity of the Port was only 27.04 million tonnes per annum.
“During last 9 months, the Port has handled 20.85 million tonnes with a growth rate of 14. 21percent. We hope that the Port will easily cross the target of 26 million tonne,” Mr. Subbiah added.
The Republic day was celebrated with pomp and gaiety in different parts of the district on Thursday.
The Collector S. Nagarajan unfurled the National Flag at a function held at Sethu Lakshmi Bai Government Higher Secondary School and inspected the Guard of Honour along with the Superintendent of Police, P. Pravesh Kumar.
The Collector also honoured three freedom fighters namely A.Rabel of Mullankinavilai, K. Kesevan of Tholayavattam and T. Mani of Kuzuthurai by offering shawls to them. Besides distributing various welfare assistances to 99 persons to the tune of Rs. 7.56 lakh, the Collector also presented the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's constabulary medal – 2011 to 44 police personnel. Medals were also distributed to 47 government employees in recognition of their meritorious service and also to three personnel from Home Guard.
Cultural programmes were organised by students of various schools and around 600 school students participated.
A first grade constable of the Armed Reserve Police Force, Raja Robert, showcased a unique feat by having a van weighing 2,500 kg be driven over him much to the wonder of the audience.
The district revenue officer, Palanisamy, sub-collector Venkatesh, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Paul Durai, project officer, DRDA, Manthirachalam, ADSP, Dharmaraj, district panchayat president, Sarada Moni, Chief Educational Officer, Radhakrishnan, Assistant Director (panchayat), Saravanan, district supply officer, Panneer Selvam, superintendent of Kanyakumari Government medical college, Sree Ram Kumar, vice principal of the college, Ratheesh, district forest officer, Ritto Cyriac Assistant Director (Mines and Minerals), Sambasivam and other officials participated in the celebrations.
In other related functions, Member of the Lok Sabha, J. Helen Davidson hoisted the Nation Flag at the Government Higher Secondary School at Parvathipuram, the chairperson of Nagercoil municipal council, Meena Dev hoisted the flag within the municipality and the district president of Congress party (east), Robert Bruce hoisted the flag within the party office.
Ten students of a private drawing school led by their drawing master, Manikandan of Krishnankovil near Nagercoil drew the attention of quite large number of people when they drew the National Flag on a 210 feet long cloth at Ramavarmapuram Rotary Club ground within three hours with an intention to enter in to the world record.
The president of Nagercoil Bar Association, Ashok Padmaraj inaugurated the event.
