: Curbs will be put on the bursting of crackers in public places on the occasion of weddings and other functions, the police have said. Following complaints from the public, Superintendent of Police V. Balakrishnan instructed police stations in the district to keep a tab on those who violate the new guidelines.

Private kalyana mandapam managers in the respective jurisdiction of every police station have been instructed to observe the decibel levels approved by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board. The noise produced should not be above 125 decibels. Cases will be registered against violators of the decibel level prescribed by law.

The drive has produced results in areas such as Chekkanoorani, Nagamalai Pudukottai and parts of Melur, said Mr. Balakrishnan and hoped the response would be positive in other places as well. A city police officer said that a criminal case was booked against a group, which celebrated a wedding by bursting crackers at K. Pudur police limit two days ago.
