Police seized 29 logs of red sanders that were being smuggled out of Kancheepuram, when the vehicle they were in fell on the side of the road after a tyre burst.

Kancheepuram district police said a van with a Chennai registration plate was travelling on Kancheepuram–Arakkonam Road. At Govindavadi Agaram, one of its tyres burst and the driver lost control of the van. The vehicle fell into a ditch by the roadside. The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled.

Local residents called the police, who found the red sanders logs concealed in gunny bags stacked in the rear of the van. Investigations are on to establish the identity of the van’s owner and the driver. The logs were handed over to the forest department.
