SALEM: Salem Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Prohibition) Joshi Nirmal Kumar deposed before First Additional District Sessions judge D. Krishna Raja in the Dharmapuri bus burning case here on Tuesday.
Three girl students of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University died when a mob set their bus afire near Dharmapuri on February 2, 2000, following the conviction of the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in the Kodaikanal Pleasant Stay Hotel case.
Mr. Kumar, who was Deputy Superintendent at Dharmapuri when the incident took place, said when he assumed charge on January 23, 2000, a ban order under Section 30(2) of the Police Act was in operation in all police stations in the district till January 31. It was extended by 15 days. The order was made known to the public through various means.
The officer said he was informed that a bus had been set on fire at Ilakkampatti. He found the three girls dead and informed higher officials.
