TUTICORIN: A police team on Friday inspected refugee camps at Mapaillayoorani, Kulathulvaipatti and Inam Thappathy in the district.

According to Intelligence sources, the inspection was part of security measures taken along the Tuticorin and Ramanathapuram coast, following recent attempts to smuggle contraband, gastropods and sea cucumbers to Sri Lanka.

Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Sanjeev Kumar had recently said that the refugee camps had been brought under the scanner.

While 41 families are lodged at the Mapillayoorani camp, 421 and 45 families are put up at Inam Thappathy and Kulathulvaipatti camps.

Refugees at Mapillayoorani camp told reporters later that the team asked them not to venture into the sea.
