TAMBARAM: A day-long hunger strike planned by the Federation of Residents Welfare Associations of Pallavaram Municipality on Thursday at Chromepet was called off following denial of police permission.

Residents took exception to the police confiscating the pandal erected for the demonstration and the sound systems. The police said the association did not apply for permission five days in advance

The Federation called for the protest against the alleged high-handedness and indifference of local body officials.

Federation president S. Chandrashekar told the gathering that elected representatives and residents associations had for long been condemning the decision to increase water charges from Rs. 25 to Rs. 50 a month last year and the subsequent collection of arrears between 2002 and 2005.

Pointing out instances of the residents having received water once in 10 days last year, he said there was no justification in increasing the charges and their protests would continue.
