The district police have warned women against cheats who try to dupe them in the guise of help them secure their gold jewels.

In a statement, Madurai Superintendent of Police Asra Garg (holding additional charge of Virudhunagar district) said that there were reports of strangers approaching women going alone on roads and frightening them, that chain-snatchers were on the prowl on roads.

Such people ask the women to keep their jewels in their bags instead of wearing them. In the guise of helping them secure the jewels safely, wrapped in papers, they take the jewels and return only the papers.

Such incidents have been reported in Rajapalayam, Sattur, and Sivakasi areas. Mr. Garg appealed to the women not to respond to strangers on road.
