Police used mild force to arrest and remove 21 people who blocked road along the Tirupur-Avinashi highway on Wednesday evening to protest against what they alleged levy of exorbitant fees from students by a private school near S.A.P. Theatre bus stop.

The crowd comprising parents and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activists accused the school management of charging a hefty fee even from the economically backward people.

Agitations against private schools in the city levying fees more than that fixed by the government seem to have become commonplace as it was only on Monday that hundreds of parents held an agitation in front of the Little Flower Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Aandipalayam for almost six hours.

Meanwhile, DYFI district secretary R. Vadivel alleged that he was brutally beaten up by the police soon after the arrest.

“The arrested agitators were taken into a bus and then some constables beat me up with lathis and hands for leading the struggle,” Mr. Vadivel said. He complained of pain in the chest and on the face.
