The higher secondary examinations have begun on a smooth note in Erode district on Thursday, with no incidents of malpractices reported. A total of 26,639 students have appeared for the first language paper in 59 examination centres in the district. Generators were used in all these examination centres as there were frequent power cuts in the district. A total of 1,292 private candidates also wrote the examination at different centres. A majority of the students said that they found the language paper very easy. Collector V.K. Shanmugam accompanied by senior education officials inspected the conduct of the examinations at the Government Girls Higher Secondary Schools at Panneerselvam Park.

Members of the flying squad conducted surprise checks in many schools in order to prevent students from indulging in malpractices. There were no instances of copying reported in the district, officials said.
