The Federation of Welfare Organisations of Tiruchi has appealed to the district administration to rename the Chathram Bus Stand after the former Chief Minister late Kamarajar.

In a representation to the Collector Mahesan Kasirajan, the federation coordinator N.Ramakrishnan pointed out that the bus stand took its name from the nearby Chinnaiya Pillai Chathram. A commercial complex has now come up at the place where the chathram was located and it would be appropriate to name the bus stand now after Kamarajar.

The federation also urged the authorities to take steps to improve amenities at the bus stand. The stand remained congested and sanitation was poor. The bus stand has only one good shelter with seating arrangements. Though three shelters have been established near the halts for buses plying on Samayapuram, Lalgudi and Nochiyam routes, none of them have proper seating arrangement. Similarly, there are no seats in the bus shelters at the halts for buses plying on K.K.Nagar, Woraiyur and BHEL routes. Buses operating on Railway Junction, Palakkarai, Thennur and Vayalur routes halt on the roadsides. There were no shelters near the halts for buses plying on Perambalur, Thuraiyur and Ariyalur routes, Mr.Ramakrishnan said.

The bus stand, which is used by about 50,000 people everyday, needs modern public toilets, proper drinking water supply and first aid centre. Adequate seating arrangements should be made. Modern bus shelters should also be established at the bus halts, he demanded.
