A. Subash Fernando, Convener, Tuticorin District Fishermen Federation has appealed to the organisers of anti-nuke demonstration, scheduled to be held in Chennai on August 5 under the leadership of MDMK general secretary, Vaiko, to put off the agitation. Addressing the media persons here on Wednesday evening, he said since August 5 marks the conclusion of the annual feast festival of Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Snows in Tuticorin, all the fishermen would be busy participating in the celebrations here on the occasion. They would not be able to join the agitation in Chennai and hence the same could be staged later.

Condemning the police, he said check posts had been set up at 12 locations between Tiruchendur and Tuticorin to stop S.P. Udhayakumar, Coordinator, People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy from travelling to Tuticorin for a meeting convened by the federation to discus the next stage of protest. He said it was a needless effort by the police since Mr. Udhayakumar was taking part in the relay protest at Idinthakarai. He also said the federation members would cast their votes against political parties supporting nuclear energy in the ensuing polls.
