A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court Bench here seeking a direction to the State government to fill vacancies in the district consumer disputes redressal forums across the State.

M. Piravi Perumal, a Madurai advocate, had filed the petition. He claimed that the posts of presidents and members of many consumer forums were lying vacant for long.

The forums at Madurai, Nagapattinam, Nagercoil, Salem, Theni, Thiruvallur and Thanjavur were functioning without presidents since 2011.

Similarly, the forums at Ramanathapuram, Chennai (North), Chennai (South), Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Krishnagiri, Srivilliputtur, Sivaganga, Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Chengalpet, Karur, Villupuram and Nilgiris did not have one of the two members required for each of them.

The situation was worse in Madurai, Erode, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Salem, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Tiruvannamalai and Vellore as these districts did not have both the members as per information obtained by the petitioner under the Right to Information Act.

“The consumer disputes redressal mechanism has come to a stand still in several districts. It is also very clear that lack of seriousness on the part of bureaucrats alone lead to this unwanted situation,” he said and sought for a direction to fill up the vacancies at the earliest.
