Coimbatore: S.M. Velusamy, AIADMK MLA representing Palladam, has appealed to the Home Secretary to bifurcate the vast jurisdiction of Peelamedu Police Station.

In a memorandum to the Home Secretary, Mr. Velusamy suggested that a police station could be established at the Tamil Nadu Housing Board Colony in Gandhi Maanagar.

Mr.Velusamy said there are about 15 arts and science colleges, three engineering colleges, 25 major industries, 100 small and medium scale industries, upcoming information technology park, mushrooming residential areas and more than 5,000 housing board dwelling units in the area.

The jurisdiction of Peelamedu Police Station covers Avanashi Road, Sathyamangalam Road, Chinniampalayam Road and includes the Airport as well.

Though the Law and Order Wing of the Peelamedu Police Station has a sanctioned strength of 60 persons, about 20 per cent posts are always vacant.

As a result there has been an increase in crime in some of the far-flung residential areas.

There is a need for bifurcating the jurisdiction of the Peelamedu Police Station and for opening another police station at Gandhi Maanagar.

Mr. Velusamy also sought the construction of a government-owned building for the existing Peelamedu Police Station which is presently functioning in cramped premises.
