The Air India Employees Progressive Union has requested Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh to regularise the services of the casual labourers who had been working for the past 14 years. In a letter to Mr. Singh, DMK MP T.K.S. Elangovan and general secretary of the union P. Ramamurthy said a committee headed by Justice Dharmadhikari had recommended regularisation of their service.

They said the workers were directly recruited from the employment exchange by the Human Resources Department of the Air India and eligible for regularisation as they had completed 240 days in a calendar year.

“Though Air India is a public sector undertaking, it has not honoured the labour laws,” they said.

While the services of 5,000 casual labourers of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation were regularised, Air India workers whose strength was less than 100 could not get the benefit.
