An office-bearer of Devendrakula Velalar Sangam (DVS) has filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court Bench here seeking a direction to the police to permit its members to sit on a fast in Ramanathapuram district, demanding the shifting of Mudukulathur court building from a “communally sensitive” place.

According to S.M. Sekar, taluk secretary of the DVS, Dalits were deprived free access to the court as it was situated in a building owned by the Maravar Sangam. Now, the Public Works Department had chosen to shift the court buildings to another locality which was also dominated by Maravars. Hence, the petitioner’s organisation wanted to protest against the move on February 28. The police denied permission for observing the fast and therefore the present writ petition.
