MADURAI: With the objective of providing quality service to foreign and domestic tourists who travel by road, the State Tourism Department has taken an initiative to establish wayside facilities.

Being implemented through the district administration, the proposal envisages involving private parties with land along national or state highways in establishing restaurants, parking lot and other facilities for tourists. While providing subsidy for the project had been decided, the quantum was under consideration.

According to Collector S.S. Jawahar, those applying for setting up such a facility along National Highways should have a minimum of 20 cents of land. The restaurant should be capable of seating 30 members and must be at least 600 square feet. It must also have gift shops, telephone and Internet facilities, besides four toilets and two bathrooms. The parking lot should be capable of accommodating eight cars.

The minimum investment should be in the order of Rs. 25 lakh. Those applying for establishing facilities along State highways should also have a minimum of 20 cents land, capable of seating 30 members in restaurant in 600 sq.feet area.

While it must have gift shops, Internet and telephone facilities are not required. It must have three toilets and parking space to accommodate four cars.

The minimum investment is Rs. 17.5 lakh, Mr. Jawahar stated in a press release. Tenders have already been called for the venture.
