Eighteen places have been identified in Ramanathapuram district for immersion of Vinayagar idols after the Vinayaga Chaturti, which falls on Wednesday.

The Collector, K. Nanthakumar, has appealed to the people to immerse only those idols that were made of clay and free from any chemical substance in water bodies. They have been advised to take the idols at least 500 metres into the sea in designated places for immersion.

The following are the places identified for immersion of Vinayagar idols in the district:

Nochivayal Oorani: for Ramanathapuram town; Devipattinam beach: for Devipattinam; the Vaigai: for Paramakudi town; Azhagiyameenal Oorani and Kovil Oorani: for Nainarkoil; Sankarapandi Oorani: Mudukulathur; Chettiya Oorani: for Kamudhi; Mariyur beach: for Kadaladi; Agni Theertham: for Rameswaram; Villundi Theertham: for Thangachimadam; Murugan Temple beach and Pamban bridge: for Pamban; Mandapam beach: for Mandapam; Dhargavalasai beach: for Uchchipuli; Shanmugavelpattinam beach and Kothakottai Oorani: for Tiruppullani; Chinna Erwadi beach: for Erwadi; Keezhamundal beach: for Valinokkam; Mahasakthipuram beach: for Thondi; Uppoor beach and RS Mangalam big tank: for RS Mangalam and Mariamman Temple beach and Attankudi tank: for Tiruppalakkudi.

In a press release, Mr. Nanthakumar said that idols installed at Narippayur should be taken in procession only by locals along the route identified by the police.

Individuals or organisations should get police permission for installation of Vinayagar idols.

All idol processions would be taken along the routes taken last year and no new route would be sanctioned this year, he said.
