A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking to set aside a September 27 notification of the Puducherry State Election Commissioner publishing a list of numbers, names and reserved seats allotted to municipalities and commune panchayats in the Union Territory.

The First Bench comprising Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, before whom the petition came up, directed the Government pleader, Puducherry, to get instructions.

It posted the matter for further hearing after two weeks.

The petitioner, J.Anandalakshmi of Sakthinagar, a former councillor, prayed for a direction to the territorial authorities to make all necessary delimitation of constituencies and meet the legal statutory requirements before conducting local body elections for municipal wards, commune and village panchayats.

The petitioner said the notification had been issued without conducting the delimitation process. No public hearing was conducted.
