CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has ordered the official authorities to get instructions regarding the distance between the law college here and a wine shop on N.S.C. Bose Road.

A Division Bench comprising Justices D. Murugesan and M. Jaichandren has posted the matter for September 30.

In his public interest litigation petition, S.A.N. Vasigaran submitted that the TASMAC retail outlet bearing number 103 was located opposite the law college here.

Hindrance to the public

This caused hindrance to the public, particularly women, litigant public, advocates and students.

The wine shop was located within 50 m from the college. As per a G.O., no wine shop should be established in municipal corporations and municipalities within 50 m from any place of worship or educational institution.

The petitioner prayed the court to issue a direction to the Chief Secretary and other official authorities to remove the liquor shop.

When the matter came up, notice was taken on behalf of the respondents — Chief Secretary, Secretary, Prohibition and Excise Department, Managing Director, TASMAC and the Collector, Chennai District.
