A person belonging to Periyakulam has filed a public interest litigation petition in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the State Bank of India (SBI) to produce all records pertaining to jewels of Pudukottai Royal Family members deposited with the parent Madras Bank Limited from 1870 onwards.

In his petition, S. Thanushkodi said he was a professional property genealogist. The jewels deposited were antique in nature and reflected the heritage and culture of the nation. They were of national importance.

He said that after Independence and merger of Pudukottai Princely State with the Union of India, the then Madras Government issued an order in October 1948 declaring certain jewellery as private property.

He made several representations to the official authorities to notify the jewellery. But no steps were taken. Hence, the present petition seeking a direction to the Central and State Governments to notify the jewellery and take steps to acquire them.

The First Bench comprising the Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam has adjourned the matter by three weeks.
