A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court Bench here alleging that A. Nanjil Murugesan, a Member of the Legislative Assembly representing Nagercoil constituency, has “illegally” obtained layout approval for converting large tracts of agricultural land into residential plots, thereby preventing free flow of water to other agricultural land from a water body spread over 146 acres in Putheri of Kanyakumari district.

S. Jayachandran, joint-secretary of Tamil Nadu Green Movement, a non-governmental organisation, had filed the case seeking to quash the layout approval granted by Putheri village panchayat president on June 10, 2010.

He also sought for a direction to the officials to initiate appropriate action against the culprits, besides opening up the sluices that were reportedly closed to facilitate the conversion of the agricultural land into residential plots.
