MADURAI: The Madras High Court on Friday dismissed a public interest litigation petition filed by a lawyer, seeking a direction to the State government to pay higher compensation to the family of a Sri Lankan shot dead by a jail warder outside the Central prison here on October 5, 2007.
A Division Bench here, comprising Justice R. Banumathi and Justice S. Mani Kumar, said there was no document to show that the lawyer was authorised by the family of the deceased to file the petition.
“Public Interest Litigation is meant for redress of grievances of downtrodden at large. Not for publicity interest, private interest or political interest,” the Judges observed. — Staff Reporter
