The Madras High Court Bench here on Wednesday dismissed a public interest litigation petition filed against an order passed by the Tiruchi Collector on December 18 stating that the expansion of Tiruchi Airport runway would be undertaken by acquiring lands on the eastern side of the airport.

Finding no justification in the case filed against the Collector's order, a Division Bench comprising Justice N. Paul Vasanthakumar and Justice R. Subbiah pointed out that the official had made it clear that the interests of all sections of people would be taken into consideration at the time of runway expansion.

The judges also referred to a letter written by the Executive Engineer, Public Works Department (River Resource Scheme), to the Collector stating that the runway could be extended by covering the Uyyakondan canal with slabs, if the Airport Director furnished the drawing of the proposed runway.

The petitioner, Savarinathan, had approached the court apprehending threat to the Uyyakondan canal irrigating 32,742 acres of land.

Second public

interest litigation

This was the second Public Interest Litigation filed by the petitioner and his earlier case was disposed of by the court on March 11 with a direction to the Collector to consider his representation.
