The Madras High Court Bench here on Monday ordered notice to the State Government as well as Bharathidasan University in Tiruchi seeking their reply to a public interest litigation petition challenging a recent notification issued by the varsity to fill up 38 teaching vacancies.

Vasanthi Natchiappan, president of Bharathidasan University Teachers Association, had filed the petition on the ground that it was wrong to have reserved 13 out of the 38 posts for Scheduled Castes (Arunthathiyar) though, according to him, only one post ought to have been reserved as per the rules.

The petitioner alleged that such excessive reservation had been provided by the varsity in order to appoint people of its choice by stating that qualified candidates were not available for the reserved posts. He also feared that the existing staff may not get promotion if the vacancies were filled up through direct recruitment.
